Must-Know Facts

  • A Certificate of Citizenship serves as official proof of U.S. citizenship for individuals who were born abroad to U.S. citizen parent(s) or who automatically derived citizenship from their parents after birth. It is obtained by filing Form N-600.
  • The application can be filed online or by mail and costs over $1,300, with an estimated processing time of 3 months. Applicants must submit extensive supporting documents, including birth certificates, proof of parent’s citizenship, and passport-style photos.
  • Form N-600 should not be used by individuals who were born in the U.S. (their birth certificate is proof) or by those who became citizens through the naturalization process (they have a Certificate of Naturalization).
