Major changes are coming for non-immigrant visa applicants. The U.S. Department of State has announced that, beginning September 2, 2025, the eligibility criteria for visa interview waivers, commonly referred to as “Dropbox” appointments, will be significantly narrowed. As a result, most applicants will now be required to appear in person for a visa interview, even if they are renewing a previous visa.
Who Is Impacted By Dropbox Appointment Changes?
-
Work visa holders (including H-1B, L-1, O-1, etc.)
-
Student and exchange visitors (F, M, and J categories)
-
Spouses and dependents of primary visa holders
-
Children under 14 and seniors over 79, who previously qualified for age-based waivers
Who Can Still Skip the Interview?
While waivers still exist through Dropbox, the number of people eligible has been significantly decreased to the following candidates:
- Diplomats and officials applying under certain categories (A, G, NATO)
- Applicants renewing a full-validity B-1/B-2 (visitor) visa within 12 months of expiration and who:
- Were 18 or older when the prior visa was issued
- Are applying in their country of citizenship or residence
- Have no prior visa refusals (unless later overcome)
- Have no ineligibilities or red flags
What This Means for You
If you were planning to renew your visa through the dropbox process, you may now need to attend an in-person interview. This could significantly delay your travel plans, as U.S. consulates around the world are expected to experience increased demand and appointment availability may become more limited, particularly in areas that already have staff shortages or low appointment availability.
For professionals, students, and families who need to plan around tight timelines, it’s more important than ever to stay informed and prepared.
VisaNation lawyers strongly encourage applicants to review their renewal timelines and start early to avoid unnecessary delays. Get in touch if you need any support.
